What we did
The artwork collection at Hard Rock Hotel Madrid takes inspiration from La Movida Madrileña, a countercultural movement of the 1980s that inspired Andy Warhol. We embraced the brief, contrasting punk rock, hedonism and anarchy with the fine art museum opposite the hotel.
A pink Menina sculpture greets guests when they enter the hotel. This piece is inspired by Velázquez’s “Las Meninas” painting in El Prado Museum. Our version is covered with the lyrics of local icon, Rosalía, and hints at the clash between past and present that flows through the art. The same philosophy applies to a pixel portrait of Lady Gaga, framed with antique peseta coins.
Local artists feature in several locations, including the bar, where an original painting by Fran Muñoz was commissioned to include iconic 80s musicians. There is a sense of performance and playfulness that continues through to the corridor where giant pink ‘SHHH’ wall sculptures hang.
On the roof terrace overlooking the city, the oversized Flamenco ‘mash-up’ portraits are a flamboyant accompaniment to the live acoustic sets often playing. Our portraits became animated artworks, displayed on giant digital screens in Madrid’s streets to advertise the hotel’s opening.
