Kethi Copeland captures the diverse mix of London’s architecture in original prints developed from her hand drawings. The artwork seeks to look beyond the iconic buildings inviting the viewer to find connections with their senses and memories of the much loved city.
As a printmaker drawing from life is integral to Kethi’s practice. Each print begins as a drawing on site. Whether exploring London’s riverside architecture or reflecting on the ever changing high street. Her prints act as a snapshot of a rapidly evolving city.
Kethi loves colour and humour, and highlighting the extraordinary in the everyday, these characteristics run through the artwork she creates. In each artwork she uses several different processes ranging from drawing to paper-cutting, photography and screen-printing. She says that fun and silliness are essential parts of her design practice.
The combination of delicate line drawing with blocks of printed colour in Copeland’s prints highlight the intriguing cityscape and lend a distinctive style to her work.
Hand printing the edition is central to how the final image takes shape, with the final combination of colours found through a process of colour mixing and test prints. Kethi builds up the image through multiple layers Using up to-22 layers of printed colour and fine detailed line work, she pushing the level of detail that can be achieved with screen-print.
