Kym Cox
Kym Cox is a multi-award winning artist and photographer whose revolutionary ArtScience practice is inspired by Bubbles. Working from her studio in Dorset, Kym has developed innovative photographic practices and designed and created cutting edge studio rigs to develop a new way of understanding and appreciating the familiar bubble. Working purely with soap bubbles, she is inspired and influenced by art symbolism, meaning and context juxtaposed with rigorous scientific research, conclusion and application. Her practice has led to to collaborate with Prof. Stefan Hutzler, Leader of the Foams and Complex Systems Group, School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin among others.
“I am constantly amazed and astounded by bubble behaviour and the correlation for research. Research that has led to a diverse and vast range of applications and products in daily use; household cleaning, personal hygiene, glass, plastics, packaging and metal foams, fire extinguishers and oil spill recovery to name a few.”
Bubbles, soap films and foams are primary subjects for research in many scientific disciplines. As an artist she regularly exhibits her work. She is currently working, photographing and filming soap films and music whereby the colours and patterns in soap films respond to sound waves to create unique patterns.
Her work has been widely published and includes the BBC World News, New Scientist and the New York Times.
During 2020, she achieved ‘Macro Photographer of the Year’ at the British Photography Awards and ‘Close-up Photographer of the Year’ in the man-made category for the second, consecutive year. Kym is a Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photographers, Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and Institute of Physics and a member of Mensa. She was awarded a BA (Hons) Photography (First Class) in 2015.
